Two BLI Clients named Top Leapfrog Hospitals
Two Baptist Health Care Leadership Institute clients, University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, have been named Top Leapfrog Hospitals. It is the third year in a row that UMMC has received the award.

The Washington-based Leapfrog Group named 26 and seven children’s hospitals as their 2008 Top Hospitals, based on results of the Leapfrog Hospital Survey.

“This is a very prestigious designation. We are proud to be working with hospitals of this caliber,” said Brian Jones, BLI consultant.

The Top Hospitals in 2008 fully meet Leapfrog standards for not only implementing CPOE, but also having tested their CPOE systems with Leapfrog’s CPOE Evaluation Tool. The recognized institutions also fully meet stringent performance standards for at least one of the complex, high-risk procedures done in that particular hospital; fully meet the ICU staffing standard; and fully meet or demonstrate “substantial progress” on 13 additional nationally recognized safe practices, such as preventing pneumonia or bloodstream infections.

Leadership Institute Client Hospital Recognized for Hygiene

The Washington State Hospital Association has named Baptist Health Care Leadership Institute client Grays Harbor Community Hospital as one of eight hospitals with “Best Hands-on Care” for 2008 at a conference held Oct. 7 and 8 in Seattle. John Mitchell accepted the trophy for the award, which recognizes the hospital for its 93.3 percent compliance rate for handwashing through September of this year.

Earlier this year, the Hospital Association extended a challenge to hospitals to improve hand hygiene. Hand washing can reduce hospital-acquired infections by up to 25 percent. Washington hospitals have collectively improved their hand hygiene compliance by more than double and made patient care safer through this initiative, according to a release.

Participants had to submit monthly hand hygiene data to the Hospital Association. Winners were determined based on compliance data and an undercover Hospital Association staffer who visited the hospital during September.

“Our clinical staff has done a great job with this initiative,” said John Mitchell, CEO of the Hospital. “especially Rosemary Chapman, our Infection Control nurse.”

“Clean hands save lives,” Mitchell added.
